Space is the place here, and trumpeter Avishai Cohen brings together Bill McHenry/ts, Nasheet Watts/dr, Eric Revis/b and Yonathan Avishai/p for explorations that give a hint of ESP era Miles Davis in terms of interplay and conversation. Cohen’s horn weaves, groans and gasps on languid pieces such as “Behind the Broken Glass” and “Life and Death” as the rhythm team floats and flutters , while Avishai’s piano goes into deep ruminations on “Into The Silence.”Cohen’s muted horn on “Life and Death” is tactile in its penetration; McHenry’s tenor is agonizing, searching and visceral throughout, leaving one last sigh before letting Watt’s careen with his drums on “Dream Like A Child.” Long sepia shadows are cast here.
