Lakou Mizik: Wa Di Yo

Ever hear Haitian music before? You’re in for a treat! This band of Steve Valcourt/g-voc, Jonas Attis/voc, Louis Lesly Marcelin/perc-voc, Nadine Remy/voc along with musicians Lamarre Junior/b-dr, Woulele Marcelin/perc, Peterson Joseph/ct-perc, Jamer Carrier/ct –perc, Chris Velan/g and Belony Beniste/acc put together a sound that is at once indigenous to the island but with dashes and hints of surrounding environs. Beniste’s accordion and the light rhythms make you feel like you’re in on a Cajun band, while the horns have a calypso lilt similar to the Caribbean. The vocals are earthy and fervent, and while the lyrics aren’t understood unless you’re a local, the messages are reported to be about faith and hope. The music itself gives a reason for hope, and anyone with a desire to feel cheered up by the power of music will have a friend here.
