If you want some soul in your soul music, get a load of Wee Willie Walker. He started with a Memphis gospel group as a pup, and although he has since located to Minnesota and built a career on secular sounds, the roots of his upbringing and faith have never left his delivery.
He’s got a voice that mixes grit with the pulpit, and along with a STAX-Y team of J Hansen/dr, Randy Bermudes/b, Jim Pugh/p-key, Bob Welsh-Rusty ZInn/g and a smoky horn team, he’s able to deliver swampy stompes such as “ Read Between the Lines” and “Hands of Time.” When Pugh plughs in the B3, things get as greasy as BBQ ribs as on “Funky Way” and “Is That It/”. 70s soul with some wah wah guitar gets you on the low ceiling dance floor on “”What Can Love Do” while Walker gets ominous on “If Nothng Ever Changes.” Best of all is how he mixes the Beatles with the church as he testifies on a riveting take of “Help” along with Curtis Salgado at the helm. The mix of gospel, soul, R&B and even a dash of C&W make this a delicious Memphis Stew that will stick to your ribs. YUM!
