Pianist Jim Clayton delivers an impressive mainstream session along with his team of Andrew Scott/g, David Peters/dr, Steve Lucas/b and Paul Ormandy/perc. Except for a vintage read of “Cheek to Cheek,” Clayton supplies all of the material, such as the “Rhythm” influenced “Lenny Leaps In” which swings like a gate and the take on “Waltz For Debby” during a lithe and serene “Miss Kelly’s House.” Clayton’s touch on the Ivories is rich and confident, and he teams well with Scott’s guitar for some hip moments as on “Louisiana Cat Club” and the bluesy “(Don’t Stop For) Coffee and Donuts.” The band always sounds interactive and inherently swinging. Comfort food for bop fans!
