A pair of jazz giants get together here for a friendly get together. It might at first glance seem unlikely that Charles Lloyd and Bill Frisell would get together, but the terms seem equitable, with Frisell seeming to be the one to set the pace. The moods and atmosphere created by them and Reuben Rogers/b, Greg Leisz/steel-g, and Eric Harland/dr sound like, while Lloyd has the title of the band, Frisell is setting the pace. Sonically, his country-esque VFW twangs and plaintiff pace dominates on pieces that seemingly he selected, as on “Masters of War” and “Shenandoah.”
Willie Nelson walks through the door and sits down for a tad and delivers a haunting “Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream” and Norah Jones is languid on “You Are So Beautiful.” Both of these include fragrant features from Lloyd, but he actually seems more like the guest. When he switches to flute, he takes charge on “Of Course Of Course” where the music flows most freely. Frisell is the master of setting a tone, with his patented picking working best with Lloyd’s tenor on the exotic “La Llorona” where the margaritas have salt on the glass. Tasty and flavorful
