Here’s a winning vocalist outing with high baritonist Paul Marinaro, who’s caught in Chicago’s High-Hat Club with Ben Paerson/p, Andy Brown/g, Joe Policastro/b and Mike Avery/dr. He’s able to swing a lyric, able to go laid back on a slinky “I’m Just A Lucky So and So” and also be fun loving on the buoyant “Don’cha Go ‘Way Mad.” He gets cozy with Brown’s guitar on a wholesome “I’ve Got The World On a String” and is boppy with Policastro’s bass on “Devil May Care.” Avery’s brushes tap dance with the singer on a tasty “No Moon At All” and the whole band gets exotic and mysterious on a fervent closer of “Caravan” in which Marinaro takes you to the dark recesses of the shadowy night. Not a bad way to spend an evening!
