Steve Hackett: The Man, The Music

When you think of the top tier of jazz/rock guitarists, names like Steve Howe, Jeff Beck and Al DiMeola pop into mind. For some reason, Steve Hackett gets ignored in America, but his insightful 2+ hour dvd hopefully will set the record straight. What you get is a retrospective of Hackett’s musical and personal life, with plenty of interviews with the artist himself as well as with long-time producer Roger King, Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree the late Chris Squire from Yes.

Hackett takes you through his years with the iconic band Genesis when it was on the vanguard of progressive rock with albums Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. He also shows that there was lift after Genesis as he takes you through his impressive solo albums Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Mornings as well as his voyage into the world of classical music with Sketches of Satie. What you come away with is a man devoted to his art, taking it seriously but not so himself. Always a good and healthy sign for all of us to remember.
