Romi Mayes: Devil On Both Shoulders

Romi Mayes has a gritty voice and style about her as she sings and probably lives the blues. She’s teamed with Grant Sienens/g, Damon Mitchell/dr, BernieThiessen/dr and Marc Arnould/key. Her voice growls on rocking tunes like “Monkey of a Man” and the slowly foreboding  boogie on “Let You Down.” The guitar work gets thick and ominous and the funky “Bee Sting” and the boogie laden “Wonder How.” As far as themes, most of the songs deal with the verities of a sad, directionless and loveless life. For all of the anger and venom on this album, the best track is the softest, with her pretty voice getting a chance to glow on the vulnerable “Make Your Move.” Not an album of female empowerment; maybe more of a “before” picture.
