Dan Bonsanti leads a hefty sized band with his arrangements of jazz standards and other creative covers on this satisfying session. The thick sax section of Ed Maina, Ed Calle, Neal Bonsanti and Peter Brewer swing to Jack Ciano/s snappy drums on Billy Strayhorn’s “UMMG” and get as funky as James Brown’s Flames on “You’re Under Arrest.” The brass and reed sections rock back and forth on “Palladium” as Matt Bonelli’s bass teams with Jim Gasior’s relaxed piano on an easy grooving “John and Mary.” A take of “Hit The Road, Jack” features a saucy trombone solo by Dante Luciani” while Calle’s tenor preaches it on the gospel standard “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” A read of the classic “Donna Lee” is given a post bop modal feel with the horns going back and forth during like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.Bonsanti’s charts enhance each piece to create new textures to vintage masters.
