Clarinetist Sam Sadigursky takes the classic Benny Goodman Quartet makeup to a modern level, with Chris Dingman/vibes, Bobby Avey/p and Jordan Perlson/dr taking Hampton, Wilson and Krup to “infinity and BEYOND.”
The band has a post boppy sound with Sadigusky’s tone clear and crystalline. The tunes like “String of Pearls” and “Fast M oney” are amazingly complex and sophisticated, while Avey’s fragile piano on “Mule” serves as a bed of rice for some glowing ebony. A New Orleans bluish “Austerity Measures” is gorgeously pastoral while things get feisty and free form with trumpeter Jason Palmer on “Do the Dance.” The two horns brood on “Life’s Flowering” while “Math Music” borders on modern classical. Sophisticated sounds of the 21st Century.
