HE CAN STILL WHIP THE CREAM…Herb Alpert: Come Fly With Me

At 80 years old, Herb Alpert still sounds as fresh as in his days with the Tijuana Brass. This album, his first in years, has him in a Brazilian jazz mood along with his currently touring team of Michael Shapiro/dr, Hussain Jiffry/b and Bill Cantos/key along with gurests that include Jeff Lorber/g-keyand Eduardo Del Barrio/key. His horn sounds crisp and clear, almost like mid 50s Miles Davis, but with a modern samba groove on creative takes of “Come Fly With Me” and a breezy Caribbean “Got A Lot of Livin’ To Do.” He leans into a TJB mood during a peppy read of “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” while sounding lovely and misty on “Something.” Canto’s piano teams with some vocals on a lullaby sounding “Love Affair” and Jiffrey does some sleek and sliding bass work on a wonderful re-work of “Take the “A” Train.” The ONLY complaint is that Lani Hall is not singing somewhere here; this one shows that class lasts through all generations.
