Composer and arranger Richard Nelson does some clever work here with a jazz orchestra. He takes his Gil Evans-influenced mix of muted brass and reeds and teams them up with folk music form vintage Pre-WWII songs. So, a pice like Doc Watson’s “Deep River Blues” includes some moody flutes alng with Marcia Gallahger’s voice, and “Old Country Stomp” has some hand clapping along with flute and Tiothy Johnson’s earnest vocals. A film noir-esh “Wake Up Jacob” includes rich solos by Mark Tipton/tp and Bob Pikington/tb and a 16 minute take of Mississippi John Hurt’s “Make Me a Pallet On Your Floor” includes a hip bass and guitar duo by John Funkhouser and Richard Nelson along with a couple sax solos and vocals. The mix of pre-swingmaterial with modern harmonies is a clever idea, and it works as well as an evening with NPR.
