THIS IS BOSSA NOVA…Vinicius Cantuaria: Vinicius Canta Antonio Carlos Jobim

Why is it that no matter how many times and ways I hear music by Tom Jobim, I never tire of it? This tribute to Bossa Nova’s George Washington by Vinicius Cantuaria is a tall and tan, young and lovely collection of quiet nights and quiet stars delivered in soto voce and attitude. He works with Bill Frisell/eg, Chico  Pinheiro-Celso Fonseca-Ricardo Silveira-g, Ryuichi Sakamoto/p, Joyji Sawada/b and Ayumi Ashimoto for low key and dimmed light reads of “Garota de Ipanema” and “Ligia.” He teams up with the golden voiced Joyce for a lilting “Caminhos Cruzados” and Melody Gardot brings her pensive and thoughtful charm to a bohemian “Insensatez.” Frisell adds electronic attitudes and framework to give extra life to “So Danco Samba” and some moody effects to Inutil Pasaogem” in order to modernize the classic sounds and feel. As for Cantuaria himself, he captures the sandy sounds of Joao Gilberto and the lilt of moonlight on this charming sesssion
