Severson Jazz Quartet: Jumpin’ Java-Smooth Bebop Blend

Here’s a tasty little treat for guitar fans. Guitarist Rich Severson has a nice warm tone on his 6 stringer, and along with a warmly brewed team of Roy Carlson/b, Darrell Devaurs/key and Gary Newmark/dr, he fills a disc with a Grande level of music that goes from the charged and caffeinated cookers like “My Bird” to Chai Tea mellow pieces such as “Communion.”  Severson’s chops are clean and crisp, as shown on the clever arrangement classic chords on “Twisted Rhythm” which adds an extra shot of flavor to the regular order. The shuffling groove of “The Wes Side of Heaven” has some impressive piano and brush work that froth’s like a cappuccino, while the funk facor on “Bop Till  You Drop” gives an extra expresso shot. This is a well brewed session to keep you percolating for days
