Waxwing:A Bowl of Sixty Taxidermists

The trio of Tony Wilson/g, Peggy Lee/cello and Jon Bentley/reeds band together for a mix of blues, bop and free form improvisation. At their most lyrical, you get some rich bluesy tenor hues on material like the title track and Wilson picks a groove with Lee while the bass clarinet broods over “Thicket.” There’s a gentle sway on “Ponderosa” and Wilson ruminates during “For Ross.” Other times you get some Dick Dale licks going wild on “The Owl Of Crowston” and scratches and clawing on “CInder” while the band trudges along like a chain gang on “A Line Through.” A mix of lyricism and edginess veer in and out of most material here. Music and mirthy madness.
