Adventure Music is re-issuing some of the classic sounds of what was once called “New Age Music” from the vaults of Windham Hill Records. This one from 1982 features the trend setting duo of violinist Darol Anger and pianist Barbara Higbie. With them, you get the famous gentle folksy stings and caressing charge of “Tideline,’ the impressionistic “Above the Fog” and the pizzicato pickings on “Gemini.” Kinetic sounds bounce around with Mike Marshall adding his mandolin to “Onyame” and warm bowed strings glow like an Appalachian Spring on “Keep Sleeping.” Totally awesome memories of the Reagan years!
The 1985 album Chiaroscuro has Darol Anger’s violins, viola, cellos, mandolin and synthesizer teamed with Mike Marshall’s collection of guitars, mandolins, synthesizers and percussion in conjunction with Michael Manring/eb and Todd Phillips/b. Appalachian Spring moods create panoramic pictureso n “Beloved Infidel” and “Dardenelles,” the latter including some tringle work by George Marsh. Folk tunes sounds make you feel like you’re listening to a soundtrack from a Ken Burns documentary with the homey mandolins on “Bach Bouree” and “Bach Prelude.” Manring’s electric bass bounces on “Spring Gesture” and Andy Narell’s steel drums glisten on “Coming Back.” This album of “Old New Age” holds up remarkably well? Any George Winston discs coming soon?
