Guitarist and vocalist Vance Gilbert delivers intimate and cozy takes of standards and favorites here on an incredibly well recorded disc. His casual and relaxed style gives hints of an allegiance to Kenny Rankin as he sits by the fireplace and delivers up informal yet erudite reads of “I’ll Buy You A Star” and “”When Sunny Gets Blue.” He feels as comfortable delivering a dark mooned read of Thelonious Monk’s “’Round Midnight” as Kris Kristofferson’s “For The Good Times” while he shows a Gilberto-ian snse of rhythm on “Mas Que Nada” and “Dindi.” His voice is relaxed and avuncular, making you feel like you’re sitting by the fireplace on “Ain’t Misbehaven.” Understated charm.
