Lauren White: Experiment

Vocalist Lauren teams up with pianist Quinn Johnson’s Trio, which actually is part of Tierney Sutton’s working band of Trey Henry/b and  Ray Brinker/dr, for this tribute to the recordings of legendary singer Irene Kral. White’s voice has a happy tone to it and makes it work well on the slinky read of “Like Someone In Love” and the subdued by cute “It Isn’t So Good.” Johnson’s fingers glow on the “Somettime Ago” and the trio rollicks with White on an extroverted read of “Better Than Anything.” Jodi Burnett’s cello fills in well with Johnson and Brinker on “Experiment” and the romantic “You Are There” while Kleber Jorge’s guitar adds stellar atmosphere on “Winter Moon.” The material here is delivered in the clever spirit of surprise and swing that made Kral such a force; a rich tip of the hat.
