****RINGER OF THE WEEK****Mark Weinstein: In Jerusalem

Multi-flutest Mark Weinstein has made out an impressive career by creating a large catalogue of Latin and Brazilian music. This time around, he moves to a different neighborhood by taking on the Great Jewish Songbook, a collecton of traditional Hasidic melodies along with originals that mix 52nd Street with the Damascus Gait. The team of Steve Peskoff/g, Gilad Abro/b Haim Peskoff/dr and Gilad Dobrecky/perc  are up to the task of making Ashkenazi melodies such as the passionate “Berditichever Nigun” or the percussively dancing ”Repozaras” sound as fresh  as this morning’s baked bread, while Mizmor L’David” has Weinstein’s flute crying like a cantor. Peskoff’s guitar is tender and delicate on “Weinstein’s “Yaakov U’Malka” and a bit of Braziliana adds some salsa to the Hummus on “Meir’s Nigun.” Celebrative music that people from any tribe can fall in love with.
