A rich mix of blues, boogie and country form a nice thick paste here as the GPGDS take you to the land of Johnny Cash and the Delta and back. The team of James Searl/b-voc, Chris O’Brian/dr-voc, Dylan Savage/g-voc, Dan Keller/banj-p-voc and Aaron Lipp-banjo-g-wurl-voc write and perform material that is both traditional in feel and modern in delivery.
You get a good dose of shufflin’ boogie here, as on the upbeat “Trust In Time” and the blues are never far away as Lipp’s banjo picks out “good To You” and Savage’s guitar mixes sounds of Africa with the Delta on “Atabey.” A dash of reggae pops in on “War Machine” and sounds from Sun Records rumble on in “Nothing Comes Easy” while you’re taken to a wooden back porch for a cozy and laid back “Humboldt County Gold.” Timeless and timely.
