From a French-Hungarian-Israeli background, violinist Daniel Weldtlinger delivers a recording dedicated to both the musical spirit of Django Reinhardt and to the spirit of peace. He teams up with a core of Ian Date/g, Nigel Date/g, Tom Wade/b and a slew of various guests on accordion, clarinet, reeds and brass. The result is an exciting mix of gypsy and Sephardic bohemia, with the caravan moving between the Left Bank and the West Bank.
Tunes like “Nomad” have wondrously melancholy minor chords that still make you want to dance, while Wesldtinger’s violin trills and thrills on pieces such as “Liberchies” and the soulful “Staphane.” Frantic violins and guitars sing together in uniosn on”Bale Boldo” while sax and trumpet mix old world charm on the couples dance of “The Maestro.” Sensuous swing provided by Marcello NMaio’s accordion on “Bal Musette” flows and glows like a tale around the campfire, whle Edouard Bronson’s clarinet on “Dark Clouds” soars over the incessant guitar rhythms like a perch looking for prey. Weltlinger’s violin and Date’s guitar solos make for irresistible energy, taking the Hot Club of France on a trip to Haifa. A treat for gypsy souls.
