The Groundhogs: Live at the Astoria

These guys   give a whole new meaning to the term “60s Rock.” Formed in 1963, The Groundhogs have been faithful to the blues the whole 3 score of years, either on their own, or backing up the likes of John Lee Hooker and Jack Dupree. Here, from a London gig from 1998, the team of TS McPhee/g-v, Eric Chipulina/b and Pete Correa/dr go for the blues rock jugular as they get down and dirty on classics like “Cherry Red.” They were in the throes of a tribute album to Howlin Wolf at the time, so stuff like “Down in the Bottom”  and “Shake For Me” are featured in all of their earthy glory as well. No frill, chills or spills here; you’re getting the kind of music that has endured through glam rock, country rock, disco, punk, indie, heavy metal and whatever else you throw in its way.
