Trumpeter Alex Norris leads a combo with the high cholesterol tenor sax of Gary Thomas as they lead a smoking B3 combo with George Colligan/org and Rudy Royston/dr. Norris uses his flugelhorn for the warm and sweet “Little B’s Poem,” but besides that, the stops get pulled out, ranging from a hip boogaloo on “What Happened Here” to a bluesy strut on “Night Watchman.” Royston cracks the whip from the seat of the wagon, riding the cymbal on”Red Flag” and giving a funky backbeat on ”Where Angel’s Fear.” Norris cooks on the bopping “San Jose” and Thomas fills the room on “Extension Deadline.” As filling as a Saturday Night Blue Plate Special.
