Bassist Bill Laswell creates a summit meeting with drummer/percussionist Milford Graves on five originals that range from 9 to 17+ minutes. What keeps this from devolving into either a self indulgent cacophony or repetitious rhythm workout is the fact that Laswell mixes up the basses and creates some fascinating sounds, ranging from aquatic as on “Eternal Signs” wide vibrated and reflective on “Another Space.” Graves varies between drum patterns and tambourine dashes as on “Autopossession” to rumbling thunder with resonant rock hints on “Sonny Sharrock.” Laswell uses bass effects that add atmosphere ranging from spacey to visceral, with “Another Time” keeping your interest the entire quarter hour. No small feat here.
