Sooner or later, you have to ask yourself “What comprises what we call ‘music’ and how does it differentiate from what we call ‘noise’?
Two discs of sounds created by musical instruments are constructed by Merzbow, who is described as being credited with playing “noise, power electronics” then Mats Gustafsson/sax-g clarinet-and again power electronics (what is this different from “powerless” electronics?), Thurston Moore/g and Balazs Pandi/dr. The four songs consist of distorted reeds, screaming something or others on ”Replaced By Shame,” while “Divided By Steel” sounds like a collection of airplanes crash landing. Eerie percussion and electronic effects comprise “Too Lat, Too Sharp” while the closing classic “All His Teeth In Hand”has us returning to screaming machines. Is this the sequel to Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music?
Spanish Donkey is formed by Joe Morris/eg, Jamie Saft/key and Mike Pride/dr. The band works on three songs here, with “Bahavioral Sink” sounding like a musical Morse Code message and “Dragon Fly Jones” creating layers of dark moods that makes your skin crawl. I’d love to know who the desired audience is here. Vampires?
