Here’s a jazz version of a classical orchestra. Composed and conducted by the keyboardist Peter Gordon, the 5 piece Symphony is an impressive collection of sounds, moods and rhythms. The opening “Exposition” quietly broods until the rousing cacophonic climax, while “Juvenalia” opens up like the Theme From Shaft before evolving into a groove all its own through the funky “Homeland Security.” Thunderous drums pound away on “Chamber Disco” with Elio Villafranca’s piano leading the way. Each piece never overstays its welcome, and the mix of reeds and brass with electric guitars and bass makes for a spicy ensemble.
