Quadro Nuevo: Grand Voyage

Here’s a band that’s just going to win your heart over. QN is comprised of Mulo Francel/reeds-guitars, Robert Wolf/guitar-bouzouki, DD Lowka/b-perc, Andreas Hinterseher/acc-bandoneon, and bonus player Evelyn Huber/harp, and they go on a trip through various countries, delivering a giant Holland Cruise Buffet of 18 tunes that mix the joyful swing that is akin to the Hot Club of France, yet with a bohemian swagger that makes you want to join a gypsy caravan.

All of the songs clock in between around two and a half to a max of six and a half minutes, so these guys quickly drive up the theme (usually delivered on a hot plate by Francel’s sax) and then pass around the hat faster than a fire eater at Piazza Navona. There are some lovely ballads such as “Dopo l Spettacolo” while some bopping tenor is served on “Die Abenteurer” whileFrancel’s clarinet takes you to an Adriatic café on “Antakya.” Hinterseher mixes piano and the squeeze box like a starving minstrel on “Mosaique Tunisienne,” and the spacious “Secret Garden” flows and oozes like a drip of gelato on a cone. Lots to love here, whether you’re in a party mood, or just want to get out of your bad mood. Fun for all!
