Queen: Greatest Video Hits

Here, you’ve essentially got a summary of 70s-80s rock, and the cause for punk and indie rock to flourish. Queen, the ultimate glam rock group, essentially defined the flashy hard rock genre, and these 2 dvds of their hit tunes shows all the reasons people love and hate them. All of the songs you’d hope for are here, from “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Killer Queen” which defined their early, more rootsy years, to the more artsy stages, following trends like rockabilly (“Crazy Little Thing Called Love”), disco (“Another One Bites the Dust”) to stadium anthems (“We Will Rock You”). After watching a few of these  in a row, you get the same feeling as if you listened to about 4 hours of Stan Kenton’s orchestra or a few operas by Wagner. It’s just so over the top and overpowering that you can’t take it in small doses. Freddie Mercury is just so over the top, and the arrangements are so voluminous that a small scoop goes a longer way than 5 gallons. As Reggie Jackson once said of Nolan Ryan, “I like ice cream, but I don’t want to be buried in a vat of it.”
