Justin Kauflin: Dedication

Pianist Justin Kauflin makes his debut on this impressive session produced by Quincy Jones. Teamed up with Billy Williams/dr, Chris Smith/b, Matt Stevens-Etan Haiza/g, Kauflin shows deft lyricism on this swinging mainstream collection of originals. He’s got a comfy touch on the keys, warm but not morose, bright but not glib, and knows how to swing as he shows on the gliding “Where Are You” and the loping “Lasting Impression.” He’s got a gift of lyricism and sensitivity as well, with “No Matter” and “Epiphany” going deep into the viscera. He gets nice and assertive with Williams on the kinetic “Up and Up” and shows some foreboding moods on “The Tempest.” He’s got a nice heart for jazz. Where does Jones FIND these guys?!?
