Chris Lomheim: Timeline

Pianist Chirs Lomheim leads an intuitive and impressive trio here with Gordon Johnson/b and Jay Epstein/dr through a Decalogue of originals. What will strike you about the pianist is that he has a rich, thick and resonant touch on the  keys. He likes to use it as an alluring intro, opening many of the tunes such as “Timeline” and “Solidarity” as gentle ruminating invitations that eventually spring into a nicely bopping groove.  His touch on uptempo pieces like “Green Again” and the bouncing “For EmilY” has a cheerful attitude. On the more gentle material, he lets Epstein’s cymbal work do some nice accents and pulsing on “Into The Hills” and “Lullaby” while Johnson gets some nice work with the melody on “ Theme For a Ride.” The closing “Dedication” has a romantic and nocturnal feel, which fits well in Lomheim’s soft and warm hands. Impressive outing for fans of rich tone colors
