Jeff Coffin plays sax and piano while leading a team of Bill Fanning/tp, Felix Pastorius/b, Chirs Waters/p and Roy Wooten/dr through mixed salad of sounds and moods. He solos to open with a thoughtful “And So It Begans” while his alto is dramatic on the rubato “Peace Now.” The band can drive with abandon, as shown on the bopping “Low Hanging Fruit” that includes Fanning’s warm horn. Some New Orleans feel comes in with a Bo Diddley riff on “Steppin Up” and Crescdent City horns testify with the congregation no “Albert’s Blue Sky.” Wacka Wooka guitars get funky on “Scratch that Itch” and some Weather Reportish moods are created on “Mogodor” and “The Scrambler.” Lots of moods with lots to like. Coffin nails it!
