Here’s the type of lady that is as rare as shrimp at a bar mitzvah. Lisa Mills brings back the spirited blues feel of Bonnie Bramlett and Bonnie Raitt with a stunning and heart felt collection of 11 originals as well as a riveting read of “Little Wing” on this recent release. Her gritty voice never gets in the way of a perfectly pitched lyric, and the tunes are heart on sleevepieces that slink along with support by Ian Jennings/b, Jimmy Roebuck-TK Lively-John Milham/dr, Corky Hughes/g and Corky Hughes on thoughtful and thought provoking pieces like “I Don’t Want T Be Happy” and “Better Than This.” A slip and sliding reggae is infectious on “Eyes So Blue” while Mills bares all as she goes a capella on a vulnerable “Tell Me.” Stories of spiritual struggles and pilgrims’ progresses are delivered on “I Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down” while her own voice and guitar on “Rain in the Summertime” draws you into her life with earthy R&B that hasn’t been felt in years. You’re going to like this one-she sings like she means it.
