Trumpeter Joey Sommerville mixes old school soul with modern smooth here on a mix of originals with a cover. He shows his jazz bona fides with a growling reading of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan”with trombonist Jeff Bradshaw, but can also show his soft hands as he produces a “Red Cups Up” that sounds like a children’s play song. Eric Essex’s guitar adds some special earthiness to “Rebecca of Birmngham” and Earl Klugh’s acoustic guitar brings extra smoothness to the sleek and shiney “Desire.” Easy grooves of R&B are in abundance, and go down easy on “Forever.” Impressive for the light hearted.
