VOCE FEMME…Malonie Carre: Forever, Maggie Herron: Good Thing, Sonya Perkins: Dream a Little Dream

The mix of jazz and the voice of a woman. Voila!

Malonie Carre leads a quartet through a collection of collaborations with Gianny Lared and a couple covers on this well tuned set. Her voice is a bit brassy and classy, and sounds clean and clear on piece such as “ Why” and the dark shadowy “Forever.” Some tricky grooves and accents by the band provide an obstacle course that runs through quite well on “Do I Love Him” while hints of Broadway come out on the dramatic “My Heart” and driving “Round and About.” A cabaret feel permeates the readings of “The Man I love” and the Windmills Of Your Mind” and “In the Sky” has a warm pop feel. Clean and bright.

Maggie Herron’s voice has a bit more auburn in her tone, and she plays the piano as well in sets ranging from trio (with Brian Bromber/b and Dave Tull/dr) to full bands with horn sections. She sounds like a l0ot of fun on her own “Things Could Be Better”and “The More I See You” while “Baby Baby All the Time” gives her a hip Veronica Lake flip to her voice and delivery.  Some nice soul an dfuk gets greasy on “Cake” and a hip reading of “Woodstock” takes it out of the hands of hippies and into the jazz mood, especially with Eldred Ahlo’s trumpet solo. She comes of comfortable in her own skin, with nothing to prove.

Sonya Perkins’ voice is trumpet bright, and when she teams up with Warren Vache’, she comes across like a double horn front line with Bob Albanese/p, James Cammack/b and Vito Lesczak-Darrell Green/dr on the engine controls. She hits it just right with Vaxche on”Dream a Little Dream of Me” and drives up the dust with him on ”From This Moment On.” She can also hold back on the reins, as she gets laconic with Albanese on ”Don’t Blame Me” and dramatically slow on ”Them There Eyes.” She slinks through “Fine and Mellow” and pops like a toy on “ You’re Getting to Be A Habit With Me.” Easy on the ears!
