Sugar Bomb: Sweet + Explosive

Old School sounds, pulses and even presentation are freshly formed on this debut EP/vinyl album by the Sugar Bomb trio of keyboardist Jacob Bruner, drummer Joe Enright and Eli Kahn on bass and guitar.

The three work together to create a mix of mellow and funky grooves, suavely walking the tightrope of keeping it relaxed while still interesting. Kahn’s guitar gets into a hip feel around the synthy scapes on “Frenzy”, leading into a frenzy’d spacey space and finally a clean closing rivulet. His strings are gentle as he simmers with Enright on the soft “Lullaby” while his bass teams with Bruner, going back and forth on the volley’d “Eli Special”. Bruner’s has a late night feel to his piano and keys on the cosmic sounding “ Rubber” over Enright’s deft brushes, while the team craftily builds up the butanes on the mellow to majestic “IDK” with guest saxist Dylan Hannan adding to the energy. Soulful grooves with a “last set” feel are  displayed throughout, almost begging for some baritone singer to grab a mic and get the lights down low.
