There’s a term called “working the room”, and singer/pianist Johnny O’Neal knows how to do it. He’s teamed up with Luke Sellick/b and Itay Morchi/dr for a git at Pyatt Hall in Vancouver, BC back in2018, and his mix of crooning, bopping and playing makes for a one man variety show. He croons with the best on a rich read of “Love Letters” while scatting through a hipstere’d “The More I See You”. Accompanying himself on piano, he goes deep on “Come Sunday/Did I Ever Teally Live” while getting suave on “Destination Moon”. As for blues, get a load of his “Home Boy” ,and a take of “Tight” has him imbibing from the waters of Ahmad Jamal. Is this guy coming to LA?!?
