Willie Morris: Unbound Inner

Willie Morris has a full bodied old school sound on his tenor sax, and he uses it to full advantage as  he mixes and matches with his team of Behn Gillece/vib, Jon Davis/p, Boris Kozlov/b and Rudy Royston/dr on a collection of originals.

His foggy tone hovers on the reflective duet with Davis on the foggy day of “Flyover Country” and is pastoral pretty on the other twosome with Gillece on the flowery “Tell Me A Bedtime Story”. Kozlov and Royston supply a steaming double time beat for the galloping Morris on the free-bopping “How To Get Away With Murder”, with some Hancock/Hutcherson post bop ideas of sophistication careening around on “Dialect” and “Patterned”. Morris shows he can dig in as well,  ip on the straight-ahead “What’s Expected” and funky on the Latin’d “The Folks Who Live Down The  Hill”. Full bodied tones.
