David Caffey Jazz Orchestra: At The Edge Of Spring

David Caffey leads a big band for his compositions that he also arranges. The five reed, four trumpet, four trombone section lines are crisp and full, with the rhythm team including vibes and marimba for some extra snap. Peter Sommer’s tenor sax works through the post bopping “Starlight “ with hip idea, with the rich horns in a Rat Pack mood over Jim White’s driving drums of “At The Edge of Spring”. His sticks snap on the intro to the shuffling “Old Hat” with Steve Kovalcheck’s guitar swinging hard. There are hints of Count Basie’s  hard swing throughout, as on the easy “This Is For Albert” and the hip high hat led “One By One”, with the team getting funky on “ Direct Current”. Bold and beautiful primary colors.
