When it comes to those R&B songs with double entendres, you either think of them as absolutely hilarious, as on something from the old Dr. Demento radio show, or you’re simply a sick dirty old man. Since I grew up on Dr. D, the former is for me, and hopefully for you. Think of these songs as tongue in cheek mischievousness, and not something to make you regret later.
Sadie’s Gentleman Club includes a couple of absolute hoots, like the lugubrious “A Little More Wine, My Dear?” by The Hawks wile hip shakers like “Move Baby Move” by Al And Netie or Gumbo Mambo 5” from the Larke Sisters will heat up any party. Eddie Cochran imitates Elvis on “Love Again” and the Pat Morrissey out does Peggy Lee on “Why Don’t You Do Right”. Lots of double entendres, but if your hormones aren’t working overtime, you might night even notice.
This second volume of Fingersnaps brings together infectious tunes from the days when R&B and rockabilly was turning into rock and roll in the Eisenhower years. You get earthy Ruth Brown belting out “I Don’t Know” with down south Tennessee Ernie Ford disproves “white privilege” with “Sixteen Tons”. Elvis Presley hiccups through “Relax” and Elvis wanna be Gene Vincent bops-a-lua through “Crazy beat”. Wynonie Harris belts out a swaying “Bring It Back” and Ike has a “hit” with “She Made My Blood Run Cold”. Your grandparents were juvenile delinquents!!
