Sun Ra Arkestra: Lights On A Satellite

Celebrating a century of life, and mostly on this planet, Marshall Allen brings together Sun Ra’s Arkestra for a fitting mix of the sounds of the past century and beyond (in both directions). The 24 member band, including strings, is ready for the celebration, with Allen able to still solo on alto sax, EWI and even banging the gong on the wild ride of “Friendly Galaxy”. The barometric atmospheres range from a dark and trudging “Lights On A Satellite” to an easy swing with James Stewart’s flute on “Dorothy Dance”, with Allen getting funky on the bright white knuckler of “Reflects Motion”. Most charming are the hits from the Big Band Era, as “ Big John’s Special” has a swinging sax section around Farrid Barron’s piano, “Baby Won’t You Please Come Home” includes Allen on a bluesy chorus ,and “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans” sways with ease. To infinity and beyond!
