Pioneer Winter Collective & Juraj Kojs: Birds of Paradise

Composer and sound designer Juraj Kojs has put together an electronic score that was the sound track for the Miami-based dance theater company Pioneer Winter Collective. The album here consists of the voices and music that accompanied the “live” dance performance, standing apart from any visual support or juxtaposition. There are liner notes to each piece that describe the dances in order to supply background for the auditory presentation, but one can create his or her own mental pictures as well. There’s an ambient mix of voices and electronics on ”Lotte” was well as electronic effects and static tape effects for “Niurca” with added speaking of messages and stories during “Shamar”. A haunting testimony is accompanied by piano on “Josue” with a steady drum beat and melding of kaleidoscopic voices for “Barbara”. Simple piano and guitar are used for framework for the speaker on “Gabriela” and synth tones and stories of struggles and life experiences permeate “Frank”. Theatre in the sound.
