Michel Petrucciani Trio: Jazz Club Montmartre-CPH 1988

Though his life was cut short at 37, pianist Michel  Petrucciani’s legacy lives on in previously unreleased recordings such as this excellent on recorded back in July 3,1988 at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. He’s teamed with Gary Peacock/b and Roy Haynes/dr, two all stars in their own rights, and the trio sizzles through an almost two hour gig.

Petrucciani carried well the torch of Bill Evans, with a dash of Keith Jarrett, and his warm and clear touch resonates throughout. He scorches through a double timed “Giant Steps” and sears on his own “One For Us”. Lyricism prevails around Haynes brushes on “My Funny Valentine” and “Autumn Leaves” with Peacock getting some room to breath as well. The team digs in on “ She Did It Again” and bounces n “Mr. KJ” with a take of Ornette Coleman’s “Turnaround” a melodic treat. This is how a modern piano is supposed to sound.
