Guitarist Jackson Potter mixes post bopping originals with some clever takes of standards with a super hip team of Alex Ridout/tp-f, Troy Roberts/ts, Hamish Smith/b and Marcello Cardillo/dr. The tone and mood is set from the get go with Roberts’ “Trams” grooving well after Potter’s classy solo intro, and Potter’s easy mid tempo “Mr. M” having the horns float in lyrical joy. Roberts is dreamy with Smith on “Background Noise” and with Ridout in a subdued mood for “ Sophia’s Waltz”. Cardillo digs in deep on the double timed “Hey, It’s Me Your Talking To” and the leader shines on an easy swing of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and a Wes Montgomery imbibed “Everything I Love”. “Small Things” is beefed up with the ethereal voice of Sophia Formella and rich alto of Jaleel Shaw adding to the impressionistic melody, with the team as hip as a hippo on Dave Brubeck’s “The Duke”. Classic styling for evening wear.
