****RINGER OF THE WEEK***The Crew: The Crew

You gotta love this team of Bryan J Hughes/voc, James Suggs/tp, Alejandro Arenas/b, Jean Bolduc/dr and John C. O’Leary III/p-key, just for moxie alone on this totally hip album. They’ve got swing in their collective bone marrow, but keep everything fresh and up to date. Singer Hughes is an unabashed hoot, jiving through a hip “Duke’s  Place” giving a hint of Stevie Wonder on a ringer of a reed of Jackson Five’s “I Want  You Back” and going bel canto on a lounge lizard read of “Teach Me Tonight”. Sugg’s horn bops on “Straighten Up and Fly Right” and sweet as apple cider on “Tangerine” and the team swaggers on “Centerpiece”. I love these versions of 60s soul Afro Sheen hits, and they don’t let up on “Me And Mrs. Jones” and a mellower than Barry White “Feel Like Making Love”. Who let them out of their cage?
