Tobias Hoffmann Jazz Orchestra: Innuendo

Tobias Hoffman conducts a large jazz orchestra through a series of original charts. The five reeds, 9 brass and four rhythm teams are tighter than a hipsters skinny jeans, with some fun dynamics on a title piece inspired by the rock group Queen, complete with hip soloing by alto saxist Florian Trusbach. Reinhold Schmolzer’s cymbals glide the brass around a graceful “Summer Solstice, and creates a gentle gallop for pianist Viola Hammer on the warm hued No Way Back.. The sections punch the bag like a middleweight on the kinetic “Convictions” and the woodwinds chirp with delight on the impressionistic “Bipolarity”. Low reeds from the clarinets set up reflective arias by guitarist Vikka Wahl and trumpeter Jakob Helling on “The Lake” and the band gallops like stallions through “Perseverance”. Strong colors on the palate.
