Pianist Micah Thomas is caught recorded at a gig at NYC’s Jazz Gallery back in June, 2023 with a team of Nicole Grover/ts, Adam O’Farrill/tp, Kanoa Mendenhall/b, Caleb Smith/tb, Kweku Sumbry/dr and Immanuel Wilkins/as. The tunes flow together as in a suite atmosphere, some serving as introductions to the next. On the more cogent tunes such as “Life”, there’s a Miles Davis ESP-ish feel to the team, while a frisky Mingus looseness mixing blues, bop and cacophony dominate pieces such as the feisty “Collapse” the scrambling “No Answer” and the frisky “Processing”. Smith duets with the leader on a solemn “Lament” and the horns converse on “Through”. Musical shoe strings loosely tied.
