Playing guitar and singing, Cass Clayton leads a core team of Taylor Scott/g, Joe Wirtz/key, Larry Thompson/dr, Jiho Han/b and a collection of guests to give hints of Bonnie Raitt and Tedeschi Trucks. The team can get down and swampy as on “We’re All Going Down” while a take of Bill Withers’ “Grandma Hands” has a soulful earthiness. The keyboards keep things funky on “Somebody’s On Your Case” and “Don’t Sleep Through The Revolution” with Clayton confident in voice. A soft southern soul.
Teamed with pianist Jeff Pittson, Suzanne Pittson sings with clarity through a collection of modern and standards. Evan Pittson’s viola adds some chamber charm on “What Can I Do” and a classy read of Buster Williams’ “Something More” and Jeff’s chromatic harmonica brings a blues hue to “It All Goes ‘Round and ‘Round”. Some Chopinesque piano creates a starlit “ Never Never Land, while the team gets a bit loose on “Blues and the Abstract Truth”. Post bop concepts.
