Stan Harrison: Some Poor Soul Has A Fire

Eclectic saxist and composer Stan Harrison puts together an ambitious album that has more ideas than a Mensa seminar. Harrison himself plays tenor sax, flutes, bass clarinet, guitars and vocals, and is joined by the flexible Kim Cass/b, Steven Crammer/dr, Elias Stemeseder/p, Una Corda/synth and Michael Gregory Jackson/g with a string quartet sitting in for the dramatic story narration  by the leader on “It’s Time To Put The Dog To Bed” Harrison’s tenor is bold around Stemeseder on “(Smaller Than) The Big Things and is textured for the traffic jam of “The Details> Noir alley shadows are long on “What’s Left Unsaid” while Crammer simmers on a majestic “All That Remains” and clippety clops on the title tune. A sonorous bass clarinet, loose piano and bowed bass try to maintain cohesion on “Joy”  while the team gets intricate and dark on “Introduction To A Continuation/To Be Continued”. More moving characters than The Big Sleep.
