Shades of vintage John Coltrane are created by South African saxist Lina Sikhaklane with her team of Kweku Sumbry/dr, Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere/b and Nduduzo Makhathini/p. All of the songs are originals, yet steeped in the Impulse! mood of latter day Coltrane’s classic quartet. There is a Tyneresque tone to Makhathini as Sikhaknane broods over “iGosa’ while a duet between the two on “Umhalahlandlela” is soft and spacey. Sumbry brings some Elvin Jones thunder to the modal “Influential Moments” and the upbeat “Indatshana”, with the team creating a declaratory rubato on “Ecako” . The leader’s soprano glides over the Equinoxy “Ukukhushulwa”, going full circle of the leader’s dare I say, “impressions” of Coltrane.
