LAST OF THE ORIGINAL HARD BOPPERS…Louis Hayes: Artform Revisited

Well into his 80s, drummer Louis Hayes is still as crisp as an Italian suit, hitting the bop sticks for ¾ of a century, starting Horace Silver and playing the traps for just about everyone else. Here, he’s surrounded himself with gents of multiple generations, including Abrahamts, Steve Nelson/vib, David H azeltine/p and Dezron Douglas/b, playing to his strengths, meaning snappy boppers. He swings easy on his own “Ruby” and is relaxed on “G”  while the sticks are nimble around classics like “My Little Suede Shoes” and a lithe “Milestones”. Burton’s tenor is dark and volcanic, crooning on “You’re Looking At Me” and Nelson ricochet’s throughout sublimely, featuring a lovely tone on “A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing”. A vintage wine that ages better every year..
